SEO

What is SEO?

SEO or Search Engine Optimization, which is the method of optimizing the website to receive organic or unpaid traffic from the results page of the search engine, helps ensure that the site ranks high in search engines for specific keywords or phrases.

Quite simply, this is how Google and other search engines weigh up your site for rankings (search engine results page or SERP): Relevancy, popularity and age

Three SEO Elements

Well, for Google and other search engines to decide where to put you in their index or rankings, they generally factor in 3 broad SEO elements.

The first is relevancy, this is your content and how well optimized it is for Google to see. The overall size of your site compared the amount of indexed (ie relevant) pages that Google has crawled (seen).

The second is popularity, and this is how many backlinks you have (and it isn’t necessarily the more the better) and how many sites they are coming from as well as the anchor text in those links (the words being clicked on to take you to a page).

Lastly, we look at age. Unlike relevancy and popularity, this cannot be worked on or manipulated in any way. The older your domain the better. Not the age it has been owned, but the number of years it has had a site on it. As long as the site’s topic hasn’t changed, then this gives Google something else by which to factor its results, and this is trust. Quite simply, the older a site is then the more likely it is to be genuine and relevant. Also, do not confuse site design with age, you can redesign your site yearly, this does not affect the domain age.

How does SEO work?

Did you ever wonder what’s behind the mysterious list of links that you’ve visited? This is how SEO works, it has a scrapper that goes out and gets data about all the content on the web that it can find. This helps them to quickly decide when a page on your web will be accessed by a searcher. It collects items like page speed, title tags, social signals, internal connections, backlinks, etc.

Then knowing the process of SEO and hiring an SEO company or agency is a good way  to help your business optimize your sites on search engine rankings. It is an ideal method because SEO companies could greatly help in finding the right keyword that can attract leads and can increase the quality traffic to your site.

SEO Process

Understanding your business and your site

This is where your campaign or account manager will take the time to understand your business and your site. Be advised on what can and can’t be achieved with your budget as well as answering questions, but also us finding out about your site. Your honest answers will lead to more accurate advice and help so this is where it all starts really. It’s here where your goals and SEO strategy will be formed and planned so it’s crucial to spend some time on this.

An SEO company working blind without relevant information is less likely to get you results.

Budget vs. Target
How are budgets being used to set targets?

It might seem obvious, but if your budget is limited and your site is new (having no links, age, and very few pages of content) then we will not advise on aiming for the stars. We have to have realistic targets and weigh up what that will likely give you in return. In short, the better your marketing budget, the more work we can do so the more results can be achieved.

There is also a minimum amount of SEO that creates a threshold below which it might be pointless. Spending £100 PCM to market your site will almost certainly be wasted, whereas a minimum of £300 PCM can achieve results over time. A good SEO company will be honest about this and not take your money regardless.

Transparency and Reporting

Whilst this is not necessarily connected to results, it will play a big part in the trust you have in your marketing partner. Results are not immediate so you have to know that your money is being spent wisely and that results are being measured in a simple understandable tangible way.

Being overloaded with crazy spreadsheets, numbers and jargon will more than likely confuse you and mask the fact that the work being carried out (if any at all) is of a low quality.

  5. Link Building

What is a technical SEO?

Technical SEO is something that most people underestimate and when done incorrectly can seriously confuse Google when crawling your site and lose value to your end-users. For most customers the Technical part of our SEO process is daunting and customers would rather not know what happened and just look at the results, but this shouldn’t be the case.

How does it help you?

With our detailed explanations on our SEO reports and talking you through the technical changes we have made to your site, this will help educate your Knowledge on SEO and massively help you grow your business and give Google a better understanding of what your business does.

Google is a search engine that crawls your site looking for information and has constantly developed and changed its algorithms over the years. Many years ago companies used to be able to use little skill and black hat techniques to hit the first page but now with algorithms such as panda and penguin, it’s become a lot smarter.

What you can do?

Remember to manually go through your site and identify anything that is missing, causing errors, and just shouldn’t be there. It’s no secret that SEO is a dark art and it is extremely hard to trust any agency but by educating your clients at the same time as doing the work to build up a whopping 95% client retention rate. To achieve this, you need to have SEO strategies that could greatly help your business.

SEO Strategy
What is an SEO strategy?

An SEO Strategy is the discovery period of your website and business and outlines the direction that your company needs to take. This is a method of preparing, identifying, and implementing measures to boost the rankings of search engines if you want more organic traffic. Every business and website is different and requires a unique approach not only for their general SEO work but also for their building their backlinks.

During the strategy process you will be drilling down into the structure of your business and what resources you have that can help you benefit from. Usually, there are missed opportunities with the company’s resources that they already have but they just didn’t know they had them and this can be massively helpful in our link building process.

An example of how your resources can be beneficial is by firstly looking at what companies you currently do business with. Let’s say you have five companies that you work closely with.

Do these companies have a blog?

Do these companies get traffic to their site?

Can these companies publish something about your business that Google will reward?

Why do I need an SEO strategy?

Running an SEO agency, you have learned that working month to month is unproductive and can lead to confusion between our company and client relationships. You have to found that your clients would rather have a clear understanding of what is being done rather than spending money each month and not knowing where their money has gone. This is why a reporting strategy is so important because every month you will get a full work report with a breakdown of what work has been done and this can include things like.

How many hours have we spent on your site?

What content have we written for your business?

Where we have placed your content externally?

What position are you in the Google rankings?

Since everyone is using search engines, it is very essential to an SEO service to use strategy for your marketing and outreach efforts. Whenever you possess valuable information, make it easy and simple to locate and coordinate search engines so that SEO provides you higher rankings and could increase your traffic sites and brings you qualified leads as well.

Tips to build an SEO strategy

  1. Develop a keyword
  2. Analyze the main site of Google
  3. Improve and develop more your content
  4. Optimize your On-Page SEO
  5. Make sure that your content looks enticing
  6. Create links to your page

Bear in mind that not all businesses can optimize or work out their websites in the same way, that is why you need to put all the efforts and build strong strategies.

Keyword Research
Importance of  keyword

Key or search words, phrases, or terms are all the same thing, but they are often misunderstood and wrongly identified. This is a vital area of SEO and if this step isn’t done correctly then your whole strategy is flawed from the start and your campaign is set to fail, not only wasting money but time too. Only by us taking the time to know your business can we get this right and engaging in relevant competitor analysis. The chances are that you may already know them, but a lot of people often don’t and find it confusing. Clients often mistake marketing or brand recognition for key terms that users actually use. We also may already have experience in your field, or that your key terms are obvious, but they are often not that simple and need researching based on a discussion with yourself.

So why is this area often misunderstood?

Well, there are a few major factors involved so we will identify these in a bit more detail. Firstly, it’s not just a case of picking the most highly searched phrase. There is only one way to gauge traffic for searches, and that is with Google’s AdWord planner. This is not necessarily accurate and there can be many pitfalls by solely looking at these numbers.

For example, if you were a Cakemaker, the term “Cakes” on its own might seem like the term to aim for as it has so many searches (more than any other term with cake in it), but it wouldn’t be. Why? Well firstly, from experience we know that this is an informational term or search query. And how do we know that? Well, the obvious thing to do is to look at what results from the SERP (search engine results page) gives us and we see BBC blog articles, TV shows, news articles, high street supermarkets, Wikipedia listings, and images.

This makes up most of the 10 results Google will give you on page 1 so aiming for that would be futile for two reasons. One, it will be impossible to compete, and two, it won’t convert into sales as it’s not specific enough and so even if you did rank, you would just end up with a high bounce rate. This is an extreme example but you can see how easily misunderstood this area is. If you do hire an SEO agency, be sure to check for this bad keyphrase planning in your Monthly Reports.

What you might think is a relevant key term for your business might not be? Have you asked all your site visitors how they found you? Probably not. This is another reason why it’s important to talk to a professional SEO consultant that can identify these crucial pieces of information.

Traffic
SEO boost traffic on websites

This is obvious. Google can count the number of hits (visits) your site has had and it’s massively important to see how many people are coming to your site so you can capitalize on this. It’s also important to monitor traffic changes both up and down and to see if you can correlate that to anything you were doing, or perhaps it’s just seasonal changes within your business or industry.

What’s also important within your traffic total are other major pieces of info such as where the traffic is coming from, what search term they found you for, what time and how long they stayed as well as what pages they went to. Google can tell you (mostly) where this traffic is coming from in a few different ways, it can tell you geographically where users are coming from in the world but it can also tell you not only what search terms (key phrases) they found you for in Google, but also what hits came from social media, directories or direct searches (users typing in your domain or company name directly). You can immediately see this is key to monitoring the effectiveness of your site and how to act accordingly.

How You Can Dominate Local SEO

Firstly you will need to claim your Google plus page. Make sure you don’t already have one, as duplicate pages will have a negative effect on your map positions. Once you have created your page you will need to take some of the following steps:

Here are three take-home tips:

Directory listings are the hidden gems in your strategy and give you the weight needed to boost your listings. As mentioned above about NAP, this must be consistent with your listings as well.

There are loads of different free listings you can sign up for but it does take a while so outsourcing this could work in your favor.  Building directory listings can be outsourced using places like Fiverr, Odesk, or my personal favorite is Brightlocal. They give quality over quantity.

Relevancy of your web directories

Make sure you go for quality listings, don’t just go crazy adding yourself into just any old directory. As an example, if your product design company you don’t want to be in a directory for dogs! You should keep relevancy in your listings and look for high domain authority directories.

Once you have added yourself to as many relevant directories possible it’s time to take things to the next step and get heavy with your listings. Google looks at every webpage and crawls what is on that page to give the most relevant results. Now when your page is getting crawled would you rather have 50 words about your business or 200? For those of you who are guessing it’s 200. The popularity from the directories wants to be as contextual as possible to give you maximum weight behind each local listing.

Your website is your partner in crime when it comes to local SEO. Not only does this build strength to your page but they actually work together. When your website is ranking well for keyphrases this shows authority in your site in that area and will naturally push you higher towards the big 3 pack.

There are several key items that are very important when it comes to overall SEO and optimization is the first key factor. Make sure you have optimized your site for the area you want to be ranking highly in or if you have multiple locations then create one for each or create a local page on your site.

Here are three take-ups away tips on Local Content

Local listings are heavily influenced by backlinks and by looking for new opportunities in your area can have a big impact in your results. There are many opportunities that can lead to getting a good link on a local or high authoritative site. But placing good content takes structure and planning, so have a think about you can answer the following:

What has your company done differently?

How do you contribute to your city or town?

Are you involved in any local charities

Has your company done anything newsworthy?

Now after you have answered a few of the above questions start looking around at your resources and if you haven’t got any then this is the perfect time to go and get some. One trick of the trade to build organic links is to find out if your business is currently being mentioned already. You can do this by setting up google alerts for your brand name to see who mentions you in there content and then reach out and ask for a link.

More Ideas to use for Link Building

Having reviews on your Google plus page can play to many advantages, and can be used to generate local as well as nationwide search results but an absolute must that you should follow is to not cheat the system and get fake reviews,  be real and ethical like your company should be. There are many fake review merchants out there but they probably have countless accounts and look spammy as hell and customers can spot them a mile away.

Get real reviews from real people and this will give you untold benefits. One benefit is popularity and Google seeing that other account holders are crediting your service or product and these contextual reviews will build more authority to your page.

Another benefit is reviews also help with conversion. Have you ever gone to buy or order something online and realized the seller has hardly any reviews? Most people’s response is to leave. So if potential clients are looking for you and you’re empty on the credibility you have just lost some dollars!

Click-through rate: How beneficial it is?

It is also another factor and having good reviews will lead to more clicks in the Serps as people often look at your brand name before clicking through to your site. Not to mention clock through will give your site a little boost in the ranking which in turn helps your local business page.

Let’s face it, everybody knows it’s hard to get reviews so maybe a little incentive will help. Such as a discount or freebie. Sometimes you can politely offer to write something for them as you know they are super busy, make it a treat.

Nationwide Search vs Local Search
What is the difference between nationwide and local search?

There are very different approaches and techniques in getting local search traffic compared to nationwide. Ranking nationally is obviously far more competitive and takes a lot more time and work but the payoffs will be proportionately higher.

National Pages

These are the pages that appear for nationwide non localized highly searched and competitive key phrases or search queries. Google and most other search engines like Bing, will pick up on your computer’s IP address and know roughly where you are in the country (at least the town) and give you slightly more localized results accordingly. This is one of the many reasons that search results vary from location to location.

You can also modify your search settings from browser to browser and even do a private search which means all your history in anything related to your current search will be ignored, as will your location. Most users do not change to these settings, but you will still get some more local suggestions on your results page. Otherwise, these pages that rank without a location in the search term will be ones where the site has links making it the most relevant site, period; for whatever you search was. So basically they rank nationally.

Google can also tell and know that a site like Amazon is not localized, whereas a bookshop with one location is. But competing for national key phrases is all about a strong SEO plan with a lot of relevancy and popularity, whereas local traffic can be gained without even a website as mentioned earlier. The difference being realized in time and budget.

Competitor Analysis
Why is there a need for competitor analysis?

We always try to discover your competitors. All areas of business have them, as do we. If you don’t know who they are then you probably should be asking yourself why you don’t know. Unless you are doing so well you don’t need to know, in which case you wouldn’t be looking for the services of a digital marketing agency or SEO consultant.

Also, your online competitors may not be the same as your high street competition (if you are a physical location). Who you may think of as a competitor might not actually be one. As part of your initial consultation, we will endeavor to find your top-level key term through extensive keyword research or the one that is still highly searched but is the most valuable to you. We will then look at other sites that rank higher than you and then try to look at the reasons for this and address them. We take an honest approach and will advise if it’s just not possible for your budget to achieve results or overtake your competition as we will look at the same info for your site too.

For SEO to be worthwhile you need to get an ROI (return on your investment) and this will almost certainly not happen for 3 to 6 months as SEO is a long term strategy. Instant results can happen but it’s not the norm and depends heavily on your specific industry and site history. By taking a look at your competitors and the following metrics, this then gives a much better position from which to advise you on the best strategy to move forward.

SEO Consultancy
How much time do you need for SEO consultation?

This question often gets brought up in the initial consultation and normally falls down to your marketing budget and how much you can comfortably afford. SEO is not something that can be bought off the shelf and shouldn’t be done for a couple of hundred pounds a month.

The companies that charge little money and offer page one guarantees are normally the companies that give SEO a bad name and have hurt small businesses of today. If you imagine that there are 10 positions on page one and hundreds if not thousands of companies are trying to get there. Do you really think £200 is going to make an impact on the time and resources your company needs? See our prices

A company should not make a quick buck and will certainly advise you against taking services that are looking too. The reason for this is we look at the lifetime value of a customer and once you start making more money and see a big difference to your business you will want to know what else we offer.

Potential customers in the past have even sent us proposals before signing up just to get our opinion and it normally helps make their final decision.

SEO Cost
How much do SEO services cost?

Often consumers in the Digital marketing industry are baffled by how much they should actually be spending on SEO. There are a few things you should take into account when allocating a budget for your SEO, and comparing prices and packages is definitely not one of them.

Although it seems the most logical thing to do it actually gives you no indication of what you’re getting and why that cost is the right amount for you to achieve results.

The best way to look at how much you need to spend is to look at what other companies are spending that is already ahead of you. Although you can’t ring them up and ask “how much do you spend on your marketing?” What you can do is look at what they’re doing now and how they did it. Then you can take into account time + cost = Results

time + cost = results calculation

How many pages does a site have?

When looking through google’s index you can see the number of pages stored on a website by typing site:domain.co.uk and scrolling right to the last page clicking “search with omitted results” and then go back to the first page in the index and repeat the same method. This should then give you an accurate amount of pages on their site.

The best way to start is to pick your most highly competitive keyphrases and type this into google. Take three companies on the first page of google and check the site: command and then do the same thing for your website.

Backlinks and Domain age

When looking at your competitor’s backlinks you should take into account the number of links, referring domains, and quality. There are loads of great software to check what your competition is doing for their outreach. However, this is tricky if you don’t know what you’re looking for as it’s not the number of backlinks you have, it’s the quality.

Google rewards sites that have been around for a long time and doesn’t give much authority to brand new sites that have only just been birthed in google’s index. Another way to look at the age of your competitor’s site is to see how long it has been running for.

Although domain age is a ranking factor it isn’t a big one so to be clear of the purpose of this part of the calculation it is to make sure you are not trying to work on a site that is less than 3-6 months old.

SEO Results
How Long Does SEO Results Take?

The tempting answer, to coin an old phrase is “how long is a piece of string?”, so simply it’s almost impossible to say for the obvious reason that all sites are different and have different histories as well as starting places. As a general rule though, results should start to be seen by 3 months, with very good results in the following 4th to 6th months. If this seems long compared to what you are being promised or read elsewhere then we can just go back to the first answer.

A lot of S.E.O agencies are promising very short times to get to page 1 from very poor starting places (e.g. a young site with not much content and no links), but this is either to lure you in (after all the sooner you are there the sooner your business can see a return) or it might signify bad practice (cheating or using black hat techniques that try to trick Google). This may work for a short time, but as previously mentioned Google is very smart, and like the long arm of the law will catch up with you. Your site can then get punished and you will be worse off than when you started having lost not only time and money, but making it harder afterward.

How can an unoptimized site rank well?

Sometimes though, a very healthy site can see almost instant results just from clever optimization. The opposite is also true, an unoptimized site can rank well with good backlinks alone (but this will take longer). We have seen some sites hit page 1 for multiple competitive key terms in a month, while others can take 6 months with terms appearing slowly but consistently. There are so many factors as previously mentioned, let alone how competitive your market is and what your competition is doing each month. Also, things like your budget compared to your industry and competition is always going to be a factor as well as getting everything right as mistakes can slow down the process.

So to sum up, most sites take 3 to 6 months which reflects in our package times as we try to not set false expectations. But it can sometimes be quicker and sometimes be slower. And if that isn’t as clear as mud, we don’t know what is. But at least as an S.E.O company we are honest.

What help can you give?
Communication

Try and remember that if you are working with a professional SEO agency or company then communication is key. Remember that you are a team, on the same side that is trying to achieve the same goals.

Not informed of any site changes, working with someone else or another company that is using a different strategy or goal will almost certainly not end up with the best results. The likeliness of conflict is high with all parties probably refusing to take the blame leaving you in the worst possible situation

Full Access

Giving full site access is also important, it means that you aren’t restricted when someone needs to do something, and not mentioning this can also lead to delay. Trusting with your passwords is part of being a team. Remember that we don’t make changes without your consent and approval so we only ask the same.

What can be served as help?

Doing certain things offsite, like blogging, social media marketing, paid directory listings, and shared videos can all help, but again only if done harmoniously. Mostly, no harm can be done to the results we are trying to achieve and a lot of these can help. But if they are done incorrectly then they can harm. All of this is part of the service provider that you are already paying for, so not taking advantage of that doesn’t make sense. Every site is different and what worked for a friend or competitor might not work for you. Just always ask or inform everyone before you are about to do anything.

What cannot be served as help?

Acquiring backlinks, copying content, and making large site changes will not help. Installing certain plugins can be fatal to optimization. As can deleting pages, redirecting the domain, and many many other things.

How to reach on page 1 and what gets me there?

The golden question. Well, elsewhere you have already discovered what works, what doesn’t, and how to do these things. So what if you think you have done all that yet your site still doesn’t generate good rankings, get little traffic and worst of all provide your business with little to no income?

Well, this is precisely what SEO agencies are here for. Being prepared to spend your marketing budget wisely, and being patient for the long term gains through good results is vital.

So what does Google like to see in your website?

Google has long been touting “content is king”, so you would think that this would be key. Whilst having unique, regular, good quality, grammatically correct, and optimized content is a major factor, remember that without links you can’t rank. And neither could Google decide. Content only is somewhat a smokescreen by Google trying not to encourage you to just go link crazy which seems fair enough.

But also remember that if you don’t rank because you have no backlink profile and just good content then you are likely to spend marketing funds on AdWords, which is giving your money to Google. So content is important, engaging content that holds people on the page which Google measures with your analytics is a major factor. The big G also likes a well-optimized site. This doesn’t have to be overdone, but getting the basics right and understanding what good SEO is, are major factors.

Accurate metadata, site maps, and internal linking is all a factor that will boost and maximize your backlink profiles ability to get you ranking.

It’s important to note this simple rule too: If something is good once, doing it a thousand times is probably bad. Google likes to see things happen naturally, so you can understand this logic. SEO can be overdone, and when it is it’s usually harmful.

How seriously are you taking the company and the website?

Willingness to invest in the long term goal of generating new clients by being found by people who are actively searching for your services is a valuable thing. Having the patience and budget to wait for 3 to 6 months will then start seeing you generate a healthy ROI and easily start generating many times the cost of your SEO marketing budget.

If you are lucky enough to rank strongly with an aged site then it’s likely that you may need to do little or no SEO work at all. We will advise you on this. Not many agencies would ever admit that. But we value referrals, references, and happy clients higher than we do profits.
